Philosophy Time

Philosophy Time
Many people are confused about the nature of God. Philosophy of religion may be able to answer some of their questions.

For instance, why would a loving God send us to Hell for rejecting Him? Has anyone out there ever been cheated on by a lover? Betrayal hurts. And if it hurts us and we are made in God's image, it must hurt God, too. But there is still the question left over of whether or not eternal damnation is ultimately the right thing for God to do in such a case.

Loving parents punish their children when they err, don't they? Punishment can be positive: character building and educational.

If God is good, He created us for an ultimately good purpose. When we think we stray from the purpose he had in mind for us, which appears to call for prolonged periods of suffering and deprivation, we may instead gravitate towards another ultimately good purpose: the amusement of righteous souls at the expense of our own souls.

The most loving thing God can do for us is to send the souls of the wicked to Hell. The good are free of them and the wicked are at last put to good use.

And it may not be entirely accurate to say that God sends us to Hell. We send ourselves there. God has given us a choice. He is like a gardener, and man's free will is the tool which weeds out all the sinners from His garden. And human suffering is like the unpleasant, passing rain, without which the garden can't grow.

By the way, I'm only human and I earlier contradicted myself on this point. Too bad that when you delete something you don't agree with from the internet, others scoop it and use it to pay their back taxes. Caused me a lot of suffering.

For Philosophy Time, I'm your host.
